At the end of the second world war the Soviets occupied Lithuania. The Soviets did not want a show of religion and they were not much better than the Nazis.
As a defiance the Lithuanians would bring crosses in the evening and deposit them on this large hill, the Soviets got tired of removing them and eventually there were hundreds of thousands of courses.
